CHAPTER VII
“Where are we going?” Smith asked when he caught up with the trio.
“To see Jack Daniel’s.”
“The man or the liquor?”
She rolled her eyes. “What do you think?”
“Not to sound like a prude, but you seem to drink a lot,” Smith said uncomfortably.
Lily turned to look at him and smirked. “Says the borderline alcoholic. Don’t go getting your panties in a wad,” she said when Smith bristled, “If you knew half of what I know you might want a drink more often than not. In fact, you have been drinking more and more just to sleep since you started hosting the Voice, haven’t you?”
Smith grimaced and rubbed at the back of his neck as if trying to remove a barcode tattooed there. She tried to meet his gaze and he avoided it as the angel laughed in the back of his mind.
“Fine. Let’s go see Jack Daniel’s,” he mumbled.
As they exited the parking lot they turned left onto Pike Street and walked for what felt like forever. Smith had to stop himself from asking if they were there yet and how much further. To him the streets seemed gray and drab, like a tourist town after a hard winter. At last Lily stopped in front of a place on the corner that had all the look and charm of an oldworld tavern.
Smith stared up at it and could envision songs sung over clinking mugs of mead and ale just inside the door. The building was Tudor style and a white and red sign proclaimed that one could watch football in the darkened sanctuary. It looked like the kind of place where weary travelers would meet up to tell stories while they rested, like something out of a Canterbury Tale.
Lily held open the door and motioned for them to enter. After getting their drinks at the bar, they chose a table toward the back that would afford them an excellent view of the entire place while still allowing them privacy. They sat in silence and sipped their drinks until a waiter walked up to their table.
“Hi, folks. Will you need menus today or are you here strictly for the ambiance?”
The question would have been an insult if not for the waiter’s tone and genuine smile. Lily returned the smile.
“Got any burgers?” she asked.
“Sure do.”
“Good. I’ll have a cheeseburger, medium rare. Hold the salad ingredients, and add some fries if you have them.”
“Gotcha,” said the waiter and scribbled onto his notepad. He turned to look at the rest of the group.
“And for you, sir?” he asked Pazuzu after a hint of a pause to stare at the demon’s eyes and skin.
“Same,” replied both of the demons simultaneously.
The waiter smiled and marked his notepad, then looked at Smith with eyebrows raised in a question.
“Can I get a menu?” the detective asked.
“Yessir, be right back.”
“Just gotta be different, huh?” Lily said with a smirk.
“No, I just want to know my options.”
“You’re going to get the cheeseburger, same as the rest of us,” Lily told him.
